Father Maltet - Forgiving Monster

Welcome to the first Homebrew class in NPCFriday, the Ripper class! Emerald Samurai (@RPG_EmeraldS on Twitter) provided me with this custom class, I strongly suggest you go check it out! https://www.dmsguild.com/product/282896/Ripper-Class

Father Maltet is a High Elf with a calling, one of self proclaimed greatness. He wants everyone to be at their peak of faith when they cross the vale between the world of Faerûn to the divine. So he will pick out strong examples of local religious congregations and high society, "raise" them up in moments of captured torment, then, once he is convinced their prayers were heard by his god, he kills them. All under the belief that he is making them the best version of themselves before sending them to his god, Ilmater. Maltet's views are twisted and not at all in alignment with the god of endurance, but he believes what he is doing is for the good of those he cares for.

Instead of just going into the background of this character, we'll discuss most of his abilities too, as this is a homebrewed class.

Father Maltet believes without a doubt that he is doing the best he can to serve Ilmater. He is obsessed and plans without rest on how to best achieve his goal. He chooses someone that already has a good standing in the social and religious community, and wants to lift them to their highest before sending them to the beyond.

He does this best by collecting a memento of his chosen. This is typically a small tear of their prayer cloth, but sometimes it can be a clipping of hair or even their prayer book.

As a driven priest, Maltet has always called others to a higher purpose, and this was brought to a terrifying peak when he went into the catacombs of the departed and found a sliver of bone that pierced his hand. It was that moment, that red dot of blood that brought him to the inspiration. All those buried in these tombs had a lifetime's worth of guilt and failings when they met the gods. He could change that, make those he loved be at their best before passing... And that's exactly what he would do.

In and throughout the church and catacombs, Maltet built a elaborate lair with a Death Alter where the final moments for his chosen is, an Escape Route just in case he is nearly discovered, and an Interrogation Suite full of the means to convert or terrify those into their most faithful versions of themselves before being brought to an untimely end.

I will say this, if your campaign needs a mysterious and dastardly villain, you may find one in Maltet! He believes what he is doing is right, so typical means of in Deception or Insight may not work with him. He, as an NPC, does not yield any information about the killings that have taken place and shouldn't be suspected unless your DM is dropping some big hints.

Anyway! I'm leaving this pretty open as far as back story and over all methods of conversion. Maybe he does succeed in making his victims their most faithful before the kill. Maybe he doesn't.. That's up to you to decide!
