Visage of Fear

Updated: Aug 29, 2019

This looks exactly like the face/mask of an animated Scarecrow, removed with surgical precision and a great amount of luck to maintain it's magical property.

The eyes glow with a deep red, sourceless light when the mask is attuned.

It's the curse on this item that makes it unique. Never being able to raise your voice sounds (haha see what I did there?) like it wouldn't be a big deal... But think about it. You can't shout enemy positions, communicate with anyone who isn't directly next to you, and you're completely silenced if there is so much as a gust of wind! This can change the dynamic of how your combat and roleplay interactions play out. And depending on how you like to DM, it COULD wreck a spell caster, since gravel whispers may not count as clear annunciation to cast verbal spells.

That's completely up to the DM, but when I have casters at my table, and if a spell requires components, I make sure they have what they need. Can't have Clerics casting Revivify all willy-nilly!

Anyway, this is a magic item that actually took on a life of it's own as soon as it popped into my head. It seems pretty simple, and I like inheriting creature abilities into my characters, but this one seemed more powerful then expected, but that's also why the curse is so potent, but only for sum. Anyway, I hope it finds it's way into your game!
